Our Summer theme is Beat the Heat + How Do I Use Essential Oils Safely?

Summertime is the season to enjoy all of our favorite outdoor activities with family and friends. From going to the beach, backyard barbeques, gardening, trail hiking, and bike riding to name just a few. But with the blue skies and sunshine comes the challenges of keeping cool. Check out our tips and tricks to keep you refreshed and comfortable when the heat gets to be too much.

Must have cooling basics:

doTERRA Essential Oils are natural aromatic compounds extracted from seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. Essential oils contain natural and unique properties that can have powerful benefits on your health and overall wellness. Peppermint, Easy Air, Lemon, Wild Orange, and Lavender essential oils all have refreshing and revitalizing properties for your cooling and soothing needs.

Witch Hazel refreshes and soothes skin, decreases itching, and reduces likelihood of skin peeling and flaking.

Vitamin E Oil is a great antioxidant, helps fight premature aging of skin, restores and rejuvenated dehydrated skin.

Fractionated Coconut Oil is absorbent and light carrier oil that will help to dilute and increase essential oil distribution while leaving skin feeling smooth, soft and moisturized.

Glass Containers are best to use for any DIY recipes because oils will dissolve some plastics. Glass is impervious to essential oils, and is the perfect container for keeping DIY products fresh. Glass is also really easy to clean, you only need soap and water to get the residual oils out. *TIP – For spray bottles try using a small empty San Pelligrino bottles and pop a sprayhead on top.

DIY recipes to Beat the Heat:

COOLING SPRAY:

When outdoors, water in a spray bottle can quickly warm up and lose its cooling purpose, but counteract this and keep cool by adding refreshing essential oils like doTERRA Peppermint or Easy Air.

3-4 drops of Peppermint or Easy Air Essential Oil
In a 1 oz glass spray bottle; top up with Distilled Water
Shake well before each use

Or

1 Tbsp of Distilled Water
1 Tbsp of Witch Hazel
2 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
2 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
Combine in a glass 1 oz spray bottle and shake well before each use

Start with your pulse points like wrists and neck. Spraying these areas will help you cool your whole body more quickly.
Spray on tired, achy feet to revive and refresh them.

TIP: You can store this at room temperature, but when at home keep cooling spray in the refrigerator for extra cooling power. It feels even better with the double hit of the cold spray plus the cooling powers of the witch hazel and peppermint.

CAUTION: Do not spray on face or near eyes. Do not use too much peppermint essential oil. If you use too much, you may experience a burning sensation. If this happens, rub a natural carrier oil like olive oil, coconut oil or almond oil over the affected area. The carrier oil will dilute the essential oil and soothe the skin. DO NOT USE on or around young children.

BEAT THE HEAT BANDANA:

Great for a refreshing cool down post workout, hike or while gardening.

Soak a bandana or scarf in water
Add 2 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
Place in the freezer for 1 hour
Tie around your neck for a cooling uplifting sensation

COOL CUBES:

Try cooling your body from the inside out. Make your ice-cubes using doTERRA Peppermint Essential Oil.

Fill your ice-cube tray with filtered water
Add 1 drop of doTERRA Peppermint Essential Oil per ice-cube section
Place in freezer
Add 1 Peppermint ice-cube to a large glass of filtered water

HYDRATE WITH H2O + EO:

We are creatures of water; conceived, carried and developed in water. Our body is about 70% water. We need it to function properly, absorb nutrients and expel wastes. Our brain is 90% water – think about that! When the body is functioning at its best, you will feel great and be happy. Increase your water intake and reap the benefits. Especially during this summer season, you need to keep replacing the water you lose though perspiration. As with most things, the amount of water for each person is individual. An easy way to gauge how well-hydrated we are is to simply look at our urine. Urine should be fairly clear. If it is dark yellow, that’s a sign we may need to drink more water.

Large glass of filtered water
Add 1 drop of doTERRA Essential Oil:
– Peppermint for a refreshing twist
– Wild Orange for a burst of flavor
– Lemon for a thirst-quenching flavor

Is It Safe to Ingest Essential Oils?

doTERRA essential oils can be used three ways: Aromatically, Topically and Internally. Always use your discretion and/or consult your medical practitioner with any questions or concerns.

CAUTION: DO NOT INGEST just any brand of essential oils. doTERRA essential oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade.

SOOTHING AFTER-SUN SPRAY:

Your skin is your body’s protector. It is the largest organ in the body covering you from the soles of your feet to your fingertips. It forms a tough barrier against germs and infections. It protects your insides from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, and keeps your body temperature steady. Your skin stops water from seeping into your body, and prevents precious fluids from being lost.

Coming home after a fun filled day outdoors you are likely to feel the impact of the sun’s rays more now, than you did during the day. Refresh, revitalize and soothe your skin from head to toe with these 2 simple doTERRA oil recipes.

3 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
3 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
2 drops of Vitamin E Oil
Top with Witch Hazel
Combine in a 2 oz glass spray bottle
Spray and rub into skin

OR

4 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
Top with Fractionated Coconut Oil
Combine in a 10 ml glass roller-ball bottle
Roll and Rub into skin

How Do I Use Essential Oils Safely?

Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential oil, such as doTERRA, have many different uses, some can be used aromatically, topically, and/or internally. The recommended use for each essential oil is listed on its label. Essential oils can be used a single oil at a time or in complex blends.

Aromatic

Essential oils have pleasant aromas that freshen the air, invoke memories, and create a welcoming environment. Essential oils labeled for aromatic use are very popular for these reasons.

Some scents may be described as uplifting or invigorating while others are considered calming. Diffusing is one of the simplest methods for using essential oils aromatically. Diffusers that use cold air or water are ideal. However, using essential oils aromatically does not require any special diffusing devices.

You can achieve the same benefits by simply placing a few drops of essential oil in the palm of your hand that is then cupped around the nose as you breathe deeply.

Additional aromatic uses for Essential Oils include:
• Apply oil to a cotton ball and place in the air vents of your vehicle
• Mix oils in a spray bottle with water and mist over furniture, carpet, or linens
• Add oil to a batch of laundry or to dryer sheets
• Use in household surface cleaners

Topical

Essential oils labeled for topical use can also be applied different ways. Because essential oils have low molecular weights and are lipid soluble, they are easily absorbed by the skin.

Using a light massage will increase absorption and improve distribution across the target area. Use of a carrier oil can also increase absorption, especially in skin that is dry or flaky as it helps moisturize the skin and slow evaporation of the oil.

To decrease the likelihood of developing a skin sensitivity, especially on young or sensitive skin, it is advisable to use a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil) to dilute more potent oils and when trying an oil for the first time. The recommended dilution ratio is typically one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil.

Beneficial Areas You Can Apply Essential Oils:
• Neck
• Forehead and temples
• Chest and abdomen
• Arms, legs, bottom of feet

Other Effective Methods of Topical Application:
• Add a few drops of oil to a warm bath
• Make a hot or cold compress by soaking a towel or cloth in water, adding essential oils, and then applying to the desired area
• Add oil to a lotion or moisturizer and then apply to skin

Sensitive Areas to be Avoided:
• Some facial areas, such as the skin around the eyes
• Eyes and inner ears
• Broken, damaged, or otherwise injured skin

Internal

Certain essential oils have a rich culinary history and can be used to flavour food and drinks. When you sprinkle cinnamon on your oatmeal, sip a mug of peppermint tea, or add fresh basil leaves to your spaghetti, you are actually consuming some volatile aromatic essential oil compounds.

Essential oils labeled for use in food can be taken internally in many ways. For example, you can add a drop to water as well as to favourite recipes.

Effective Methods of Internal Use:
• Use oils in recipes for cooking or baking to replace fresh or dried herbs and spices
• Remember that essential oils are much more potent than dried or fresh herbs and spices, so start with a very small amount
• For more potent oils, it may be better to administer them by toothpicks (dip the end of a clean toothpick into the oil and then add to the food) rather than drops
• Add essential oils to water, smoothies, milk, tea, or other drinks

For all application methods, be sure to read and follow the labels for specific instructions and safety information.
