Doctors of chiropractic diagnose, treat, and help prevent conditions and disorders related to muscle, bones, joints, and nerves. Their knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and biomechanics sets them apart for the care of the dynamic human body. As primary care practitioners, chiropractors provide a range of care that may include manual therapy, exercise, nutritional, dietary, and lifestyle counselling. Chiropractic care may complement or support medical or other holistic care by relieving musculoskeletal issues associated with other conditions. There are many reasons to see a chiropractor: work strains, accidents, sports injuries, household chores, even the stress of daily living can cause painful joint and spinal problems. Even if you do not have painful symptoms, chiropractic can help you maintain healthy spine and joint function. Here are some of the most common reasons why more than 4 million Canadians visit a chiropractor each year: Chiropractic care may: Active Release Technique (ART ® ) is a patented therapy used to treat soft tissues: muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves to break down fibrous and scar tissue restoring function, elasticity, performance while alleviating pain and speeding recovery, especially in longstanding conditions. Over time, muscles and other soft tissues that are overused experience changes that mimic the effects of trauma, resulting in scar or fibrous tissue formation, causing loss of elasticity and function as well as diminished oxygen delivery (hypoxia). Nerves can become entrapped causing additional problems. The doctor can assess the dynamic relationships between the muscles, fascia, and nerves in the area of injury. An ART ® treatment involves the doctor using hands to detect areas of tightness, tension, and texture changes. Abnormal tissues are treated using a combination of specific, active patient movements while placing the tissues under precise tension. . By selectively and specifically breaking down these areas of tough, dense scar tissue, pain is reduced, circulation improved, and function restored. Acupuncture is an ancient therapy that has stood the test of time for its ability to treat many types of conditions and disorders. At its most basic, it involves the insertion of very thin, single use, pre-sterilized stainless steel needles through the skin. This process stimulates local changes such as increased circulation and altered chemical messaging that reduces pain, decreases swelling, and stimulates healing. As local nerves are activated regularly with acupuncture, the treatments can promote the enhanced production of the body’s natural painkillers, the endorphins, to create longer periods of pain relief. Side effects are minimal to none, making it a natural choice for health care providers. Acupuncture historically is one of many tools used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Points to be treated are selected based on an understanding of how energy (Qi, pronounced chi) moves through the body to promote health and resilience. It is believed that an imbalance, blockage, or inappropriate level of the flow of qi creates pain, dysfunction, or illness. Acupuncture needles are inserted into selected points to promote qi to flow in a harmonious and balanced manner through the body. Chiropractic Services
