Mental health is just as important as physical health. There is a strong correlation between our minds, bodies, and souls. This connection refers to how our thoughts and feelings impact our physical well-being, emotions, and behaviors. It also refers to how our behaviors and emotions impact our thought processes. Mental health counseling addresses concerns using a biopsychosocial+ approach, focusing on an individual’s behavioral, cognitive, emotional, social, and spiritual/cultural aspects that become impacted due to substance use or a decline in mental functioning. Mental health counseling provides a safe space for individuals to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The goal is to help support individuals in identifying stressors, becoming aware of maladaptive (unhealthy) coping skills, regulating emotions, healing from past traumas/significant life events, and creating adaptive (healthy) coping skills. Each individual is different. There is no “one size fits all” approach to counseling. Therefore, each individual will receive counseling fit for their specific needs. These needs may include coping with depression, anxiety, stress, anger, substance use, low self-worth, a lack of boundaries, healing from abuse, emotion regulation, grief and loss, relationship issues, destructive thinking patterns, and problematic patterns. Individuals are given the support, validation, and accountability required to create healthier habits and improve their quality of life. In Couples Counselling and Family Therapy, the client is the relationship. Relationships are hard work and require insight, patience, time and commitment. The effort necessary to improve a relationship is to become acquainted with how the past (family of origin, past relationships) informs the present; how attachment patterns and defense mechanisms impact communication; how power operates in the dynamic, and learning what is the ‘dance’ that we do. The quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives. Relationship work is challenging but rewarding. TL Services
